BrizLabs Matter Network Connection Guide

Quick Start Instructions for BrizLabs Smart Lighting Products

Introduction

Thank you for choosing BrizLabs smart lighting. Our Matter-compatible products deliver beautiful, intelligent illumination that works seamlessly across the major smart home platforms. Matter is the universal smart home standard that enables secure, local control and true interoperability — no proprietary hubs required for core functions.

This guide walks you through the simple process of connecting your BrizLabs device to your preferred ecosystem using the standardized Matter QR code flow.

Supported Ecosystems & Apps

BrizLabs products work with the following Matter-enabled platforms:

  • BrizLabs App — Recommended for full feature access (advanced scenes, music sync on RGBCW models, custom animations, precise tunable white)
  • Apple Home / HomeKit
  • Google Home
  • Amazon Alexa
  • Samsung SmartThings

Important Cautions

⚠  Please read before starting setup:

  1. You need to complete the network connection using one of the Matter-supporting apps (Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, SmartThings, or BrizLabs).
  2. A stable 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network is required for setup. 5 GHz-only networks will not work for initial commissioning.
  3. Changing your Wi-Fi network name (SSID) or password after setup may cause Matter devices to malfunction or go offline. Re-pairing may be required.
  4. Power on the device and ensure it is in pairing mode before scanning the QR code.

Preparation: Enter Pairing Mode

Before scanning the QR code, your BrizLabs device must be put into Matter pairing (commissioning) mode.

For BrizLabs Floor Lamp

Follow these steps to activate pairing mode:

  • Power on the floor lamp.
  • Locate the control box (usually inline on the power cord or at the base).
  • Press and hold the button on the control box.
  • Continue holding until both the indicator light and the lamp itself illuminate solid orange. This visual confirmation means the device is now in pairing mode and ready to be commissioned.

Note: The exact button sequence or method to enter pairing mode can vary by model (Spotlight Pro, pathway lights, etc.). Always refer to your specific product’s Quick Start Guide. If unsure, contact BrizLabs support.

Step-by-Step Setup Instructions

Step 1 Locate the Matter QR Code

Find the Matter QR code on your BrizLabs product. It is commonly located on the product packaging, on a sticker attached to the device (bottom of base, back of control box, or inside any battery compartment), or printed in the included documentation. The code is a standard Matter commissioning QR code.

Step 2 Turn On Bluetooth on Your Smartphone

Enable Bluetooth in your phone’s Settings. Bluetooth is required during the initial pairing process for secure credential exchange between your phone and the device. You can disable it after setup is complete if desired.

Step 3 Open a Matter-Supported App

Launch your preferred app and navigate to the device addition screen:

  • BrizLabs App: Look for “Add Device” or the Matter icon
  • Apple Home: Tap the “+” icon → “Add Accessory”
  • Google Home: Tap “+” → “Set up device” → “New devices” or Matter option
  • Amazon Alexa / SmartThings: Use the respective “Add Device” or “Matter” flow

Step 4 Scan the QR Code & Follow On-Screen Prompts

Use the in-app camera to scan the Matter QR code. The app will then guide you through the remaining steps, which typically include:

  • Selecting your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and entering the password
  • Naming the device (e.g., “Living Room Floor Lamp”)
  • Assigning the device to a room or zone
  • Confirming permissions for local network discovery

When setup completes successfully, the lamp’s light or indicator will usually return to normal operation (often a white or confirmation animation). The device will now appear in your chosen app and can be controlled locally.

After Successful Connection

Your BrizLabs device is now a native Matter device. You can control basic on/off, brightness, and color temperature from any Matter-compatible controller or voice assistant in your home.

For the richest experience — including exclusive BrizLabs features such as meditation/fire/Christmas/July 4th scenes, music visualization sync (on RGBCW Spotlight Pro models), advanced scheduling, and beautiful animations — continue using the BrizLabs App. Because Matter supports multi-admin, your device can be simultaneously managed by multiple platforms without conflict.

Troubleshooting

Device does not enter pairing mode (no solid orange light):

  • Power cycle the lamp (unplug for 15 seconds). Try holding the control box button for a full 5–10 seconds. Ensure you are pressing the correct button.

QR code will not scan:

  • Ensure bright, even lighting. Hold the phone 15–30 cm (6–12 inches) away and keep it steady. Most Matter QR codes also have a numeric setup code printed nearby — use manual entry in the app if scanning fails.

Setup fails or connection times out:

  • Verify your phone is connected to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network (not 5 GHz). Move closer to the router during setup. Restart your phone and router. Disable any active VPN. Ensure the device is within good Wi-Fi range.

Device goes offline later:

  • Check Wi-Fi signal strength at the lamp location. Consider a mesh Wi-Fi system or extender if the signal is weak. If you changed your router settings, you may need to re-pair the device.

Factory Reset

If you need to remove the device from all networks and start over, use the “Remove device” or “Forget device” function inside your Matter app first. Then perform a factory reset on the hardware according to your model’s instructions (commonly a longer button hold or specific power cycle sequence). Contact BrizLabs support for model-specific reset steps if needed.

Why do BrizLabs smart lights require a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network?

BrizLabs smart lights are designed to connect to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks because they provide better range and stability, especially for smart home devices. Many routers broadcast both 2.4GHz and 5GHz under the same network name (SSID), which can cause connection issues during setup.

Solution 1: Temporarily Disable the 5GHz Band (Recommended)

1. Access your router settings by entering 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in a web browser and logging in.

2. Navigate to Wi-Fi settings and temporarily disable the 5GHz band, leaving only the 2.4GHz network active.

3. Pair your smart lights using the BrizLabs app.

4. Once connected, re-enable the 5GHz band if needed.

Solution 2: Separate the 2.4GHz and 5GHz Bands on Your Router

Many routers allow you to create separate SSID names for 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks. If supported:

1. Access your router settings and look for the Wi-Fi or Wireless settings section.

2. Rename the 2.4GHz network (e.g., “HomeWiFi_2.4G”) and 5GHz network (e.g., “HomeWiFi_5G”).

3. Connect your smart lights to the 2.4GHz network for a stable connection.

Yes, many routers allow you to assign different SSIDs to the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. This ensures that your smart lights connect directly to the 2.4GHz network, improving compatibility and stability.

• Restart your router and smart lights.

• Check for firmware updates on your router and smart lights.

• Reset the smart lights and retry the setup.

• Contact BrizLabs support for further assistance.

✅ Separating 2.4GHz and 5GHz Bands (Different SSIDs)

Pros:

✔ Ensures devices connect to the correct band, allowing smart devices (such as smart lights and cameras) to use 2.4GHz, while high-speed devices (such as smartphones and laptops) use 5GHz.

✔ Reduces connection issues, as some smart devices do not support 5GHz and may fail to connect if the bands are merged.

✔ Optimizes network management, allowing users to manually select the appropriate Wi-Fi band for each device.

Cons:

✖ Requires manual selection of the Wi-Fi band, meaning users may need to switch between 2.4GHz and 5GHz manually.

✖ Wi-Fi experience may be affected, as devices connected only to 2.4GHz cannot take advantage of the faster speeds of 5GHz when available.

✅ Merging 2.4GHz and 5GHz Bands (Same SSID)

Pros:

✔ Simplifies user operation, as devices automatically select the optimal signal without needing to manually switch bands.

✔ Seamless roaming, allowing devices to automatically switch to the stronger signal when moving around the home.

✔ Suitable for general users who do not want to manage separate SSIDs.

Cons:

✖ May cause smart devices to fail to connect, as some smart home devices only support 2.4GHz, and if the router assigns 5GHz automatically, they may not work properly.

✖ Devices may connect to the wrong band, for example, a device far from the router may still attempt to connect to 5GHz, leading to weak signals or disconnection.

✖ Interference issues, as some devices may continuously switch between 2.4GHz and 5GHz, affecting network stability.

Which Option is Best for You?

• If you use smart home devices (smart lights, cameras, etc.), it is recommended to separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz to avoid connectivity issues.

• If your home mainly uses high-speed devices (smartphones, laptops, etc.) and you prefer seamless roaming, merging both bands may be more convenient.

• Advanced Option: If your router supports Band Steering, it can intelligently manage devices and connect them to the best band without needing to separate SSIDs.

For smart home users, separating 2.4GHz and 5GHz generally provides a more stable connection, while for general users, merging the bands may offer more convenience.
